The old school MMORPG RuneScape is the best rated free2play MMO on Steam

RuneScape is an over 20-year-old MMORPG that was released on Steam in 2020. But the old-school MMO quickly made friends there and got positive review scores of 88 percent. But why are the players so crazy about this oldie?

What is RuneScape?

RuneScape is a fantasy MMORPG from the developer and publisher Jagex. They are also behind the new co-op action game Space Punks. But RuneScape is an old-fashioned online RPG from 2001.

Since the release, the game has been revised several times and thus successors such as RuneScape 2 and 3 have emerged, while the original also continued as Classic. There is also the spin-off Old School Runescape and RuneScape 3, which appeared on Steam in October 2020 and can be played in crossplay with the mobile version.

If you look at the most popular free MMORPGs on Steam, RuneScape is at the top of the list. The game has 88 percent positive ratings for the entire period since its release.

But why is an old-school game like RuneScape still so popular today?

These are the features of RuneScape

What the players love about RuneScape: If you look at the votes of the community and fans, the following reasons for the success of the game are mentioned again and again:

  • There are always interesting things to do
  • The quests are funny and original, there are hardly any boring quests and you often have to solve real puzzles
  • Old-school flair, but with quality-of-life elements
  • Comfortable pace, the game leaves itself and the players time to explore and try out
  • The community should be very helpful and nice
  • Humor is not neglected
  • Looks for a thrilling progression system where you get better at the things you do actively
  • You can just walk through the world, fight against monsters and collect osrs gold

What the players say: There are some hymns of praise to be heard on Steam. The main focus is on the addictive gameplay and the nostalgia factor:

“It’s everything an RPG has to be. The best-written and funniest stories I’ve come across. A graphic that captures immersion great. It runs on almost every computer. And is also something for single players. The scope is gigantic, and if you stick to the guidelines, you get a good overview.  The business model is fair and good, you don’t have to [take out a subscription], but at 7 euros per month, you can’t complain. The calm in this game is impressive. I can completely let go and immerse myself in the world. You should still be patient. The combat system is even fully automatic, depending on the setting, which I actually find excellent because I tend to follow the story. An RPG classic without equal. Full buy recommendation.”

But there are also some individual voices complaining that there is an optional subscription system that hides various functions in the game behind a paywall. According to some players, if you really want to play RuneScape intensively, you can’t avoid a subscription in the end. Other players, on the other hand, argue that there would be enough to do without a subscription and that even as a Free2Play player you would not get bored anytime soon.
